I recently visited Mediterranean Aqua in South Croydon with my mum, Julia. The warm welcome we received from the owner Dasos was in stark contrast to the chill outside, and he continued to ensure we were comfortable throughout the evening. We were shown to our seats and introduced to our charming and jovial waiters Ferdi and George, who brought over some fresh bread and olives, and more importantly, a wine menu. We opted for the house white, the crisp and well-balanced Le Bosq Blanc. Taking a hearty gulp, I let my gaze wander across my surroundings; the buzz in the restaurant was evocative of a Saturday evening rather than a Thursday, while subtle lighting and carefully chosen interior décor provided an elegant and relaxed environment.
There was a varied range of dishes available, with a good selection of pasta and risottos, meat and fish choices, and house specialities. I opted for the Italian Meze platter to start, which had a generous portion of cured meats, buffalo mozzarella, and chargrilled vegetables. The aubergine was particularly delicious. Mum had Warm Goat’s Cheese with Aubergine and Rocket, which she repeated was ‘just lovely’ between mouthfuls.
For my main course, I was recommended a house speciality called Kleftiko, a Greek dish of slow cooked lamb in a rich tomato and red wine sauce. The meat was extremely tender and I mopped up the sauce enthusiastically with my side of roast potatoes and fresh vegetables. Mum chose another Greek house speciality, Stifado, a delicately flavoured dish of slow-braised beef which she thoroughly enjoyed. Too full to contemplate dessert, we both finished with perfectly presented coffees.
I would recommend Mediterranean Aqua for any occasion. They are currently taking bookings for Christmas parties, and with their choice of set-menus and lively atmosphere, Mediterranean Aqua would be a superb choice of venue. To book call 0208 667 0070.
