On Monday, 30th April a long-awaited extension at St. John's C of E Primary School in Caterham was opened by The Right Reverend Christopher Chessun, Bishop of Southwark. The ceremony was also attended by the newly appointed High Sheriff of Surrey, Mrs Karin Sehmer, Surrey County Councillor Mrs Sally Marks, Fr Jerry Garton and local parish councillors. During the afternoon the visitors met pupils and enjoyed a tour of the school, followed by collective worship lead by the Bishop. Afterwards, the Bishop cut the ribbon to mark the opening of the extension, watched by the delighted pupils and teachers of the whole school. St. John's School was founded in 1867, and moved from the original site (now the Miller Centre) to Markfield Road in 1976. In 2003 the infant and junior schools were amalgamated, but continued to have separate reception offices, staff rooms and Headteachers' offices. The extension now provides a single reception area and staff room, with the redundant former offices now accommodating an infant library, and pupil and staff work rooms. |
