Opposite The Dene Hospital on Church Road, Caterham Hill is Queen’s Park, so named because it was built to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.
Walk through the park to Chaldon; follow the footpath (adjacent to Manor Avenue) which is part of the park’s boundary until you reach Roffes Lane in Chaldon. Turn left and when you reach Willey Farm Lane (it’s on the right-hand side of the road) walk to Pilgrims Lane which is part of the Pilgrims Way.
Walk past Willey Park Farm, take the first footpath on the right and head north to Birchwood Lane. Turn right to join Chaldon Common Road. The distance for this circular trip is about three miles.
Returning to Caterham Hill there is a choice of pubs for refreshments. If you return to Queen’s Park, use the two alleyways connecting Queens Park Road with Park Road (crossing Court Road) and you find The King and Queen pub on the junction of the High Street and Park Road. You can also walk from Queen’s Park to the old Caterham Barracks site (now known as ‘The Village’) in Caterham-on-the-Hill.
At Roffes Lane turn right on to Chaldon Road, cross this busy road, and then walk along Green Lane which runs adjacent to the Surrey National Golf Course. After about one mile you arrive at The Village where you can enjoy some refreshments at The Ladybird pub near Tesco. If you are starting from Caterham Valley, you can avoid the busy traffic on Church Hill and ascend the steep Waller Lane to reach Queen’s Park.
