Sunny days are so welcome, but throw a spotlight on all that needs to be done. I have made a good start on pruning back the roses, clematis and apple trees, feeding with long-life feeds as I go. Where possible, I am also putting a thick layer of horse manure around the roses and clematis, avoiding piling it up against the trunks. The snowdrops have been a delight, and the yellow aconites, which are sadly not visible from the house. I did once try and plant some within view, but like snowdrops, are best transplanted in 'the green', meaning just after the flowers are finished, but the plant is still green. Rather than risk my one patch of aconites, I am going to let it set seed and sprinkle them around where I want them. The fox will no doubt have his say. By the time he has dug his holes they may end up in quite a different place, but wherever, they will be appreciated. The first tomato seeds were sown in mid February. They will be indoors until temperatures are a lot warmer. Usually friends and family mop up extra plants but last summer's rain caused blight to any grown outdoors so I may not have many takers. Hopefully this summer will be very different as my grandchildren always love to pick and eat the cherry tomatoes which ripen more quickly given half a chance. I have trialled quite a few types, and one of my favourites is still Gardener's Delight. |
