This month we feature 85 year-old George Beaton. who is a member of Caterham Rotary Club. George spent 25 years in the RAF and was awarded the Air Force Cross (AFC) for bravery. As a choirboy, George sang at the coronation of George VI in 1936. Birthplace: Chiswick. Marital Status: Married for 56 years to Mary, who passed away in October 1998. Children: Two sons, Richard and Malcolm, one adopted daughter, Shona and seven grandchildren. Cars: Ford Mondeo. Pets: No pets, but I used to have a dog and a couple of cats. Childhood Hero: Franz Stampfl, my Geography teacher at school who was the world champion javelin thrower. Favourite Food and Drink: Steak and lager (and coffee). Pastimes: Ten-pin bowling, Rotary and watching sport (especially athletics). Likes: Travelling; Eating out with good company. Dislikes: Tea, coconut and marzipan. If I get any of those in my mouth it is awful! Also, people who feel superior to others. Favourite TV Show: At the moment, the American crime series, NCIS. Favourite Books: Novels, including novels by Neville Shute which I am re-reading at the moment. Favourite song of all time: 'Someone to watch over me' by George Gershwin. Who would you most like to throw a custard pie at? Hitler. Favourite holiday destination: Gorston-Upon-Sea near Great Yarmouth where my father bought a holiday home when I was a child. Biggest influence on your life: My parents. Proudest moment: Receiving the AFC in 1964. Most embarrassing moment: I have them all the time because I have a habit of saying things which I regret about ten seconds later. My mouth runs away with me sometimes! Where would you most like to live? In the Cotswolds. Who would you most like to meet? Manfred von Richthofen (The Red Baron). If you won the Lottery jackpot, how would you spend it? I would travel Business Class instead of Economy and use the money to make the lives of other people better. |
