Following the initial success of Speedwatch, Caterham on the Hill Parish Council is keen to sign up more volunteers to take part in this scheme that helps tackle speeding motorists. PC Cocks, the casualty reduction officer for the police, explains: "From speaking to residents we have found that speeding and anti social driving is often their top concern in the areas where they live. Community Speedwatch is great because it gives local people the chance to take an active role in making their communities safer and just an hour or two a month can make a real difference. We are keen for as many people as possible to offer their assistance. The scheme is very flexible and is made to fit in with the people involved." The volunteers work in pairs or groups at an identified location selected by local communities in consultation with Surrey Police. They record speeds of motorists in a log and offenders travelling at excess speeds will be identified from the data provided and sent a 'yellow' letter of advice which will also ask for their co-operation in the future. The aim is for the presence of the Speedwatch volunteers out on the streets to make drivers think twice about their driving habits and slow down. The role of enforcement against speeding drivers remains the responsibility of Surrey Police and the information gathered by the volunteers is not used as evidence for a prosecution.
