Caterham resident Harriett Christelow, a 17-year old Art and Design student at East Surrey College, has received a £500 prize for her winning trophy design. The prize was awarded by Black & Veatch, a leading global engineering, consulting and construction company, that has its main UK office in Redhill. Students studying at the college for their National Diploma in Art and Design were briefed to design and manufacture a specially commissioned trophy to be presented to the winner of the CIWEM 'World of Difference' Award 2011. The international 'World of Difference' award focuses on the practical application of innovative science and engineering for sustainable development within the water and energy sector. As the award's sponsor, Black & Veatch provides a specially commissioned trophy to be presented to the 'World of Difference' award winner. An annual competition to design and manufacture the trophy was created by Black & Veatch as a special project to encourage students near its Redhill office to become involved with industry. As well as engaging the students to undertake a "live" project, the design project comprises a core unit covering materials techniques and processes that forms part of the students' two-year National Diploma in Art and Design. Robert Jones, Head of Art, Design & Media at East Surrey College said that "this is an excellent live project for our first year Art & Design students as it introduces them to the rigors of working to a real brief for an international company. Black & Veatch understand the value of linking industry with education and our students see the rewards." Harriett was presented with a cheque for £500 by Matthew Nott, a Black & Veatch Managing Director, who commented: "I am very grateful to the college, tutors and students for their continued support and commitment to take on this annual project. This trophy design competition continues to draw finalists of a very high calibre and designs of an exceptional standard. It is also very pleasing to hear that the project has inspired some students to further their careers in 3-D and textile design. There are clearly a large number of students at East Surrey College with a very bright future." The trophy was presented to the winner of the CIWEM "World of Difference" award at a prestigious ceremony at CIWEM's Annual Dinner in London on Thursday 19th May. |
