One year ago, Caterham web designer, Paul Hooper organised a concert by Anup Kumar Biswas at the Sacred Heart Church in Caterham. The concert was a great success and raised much needed funds for the Mathieson Music School in Calcutta (www.mathiesonmusictrust.org), which was founded by Anup and relies almost entirely on funds raised by the cellist. Father Kieran Gardiner, parish priest at the Sacred Heart Church, has once again agreed to host another concert. This year, Anup has brought six pupils and staff from the Mathieson Music School itself. The ensemble will comprise cellists, violinists, tabla players, vocalists, and dancers and will feature both classical European and traditional Indian music, along with Indian classical dance. The concert will be on Thursday 16th June 2011 at 7.00pm at the Sacred Heart Church in Essendene Road, Caterham. The suggested donation for the concert is £10 and for those booking in advance, a curry will be provided in the church hall after the concert. Anup Kumar Biswas is one of the world's leading concert cellists. He has played as soloist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; he played an Indian raga at the personal request of HRH the Prince of Wales; he has performed at the Royal Albert Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Westminster Abbey, St Paul's Cathedral, and the House of Commons. The concert will be in aid of The Mathieson Music Trust and School India. The children who come to the school are selected on a basis of need, coming from destitute, illiterate and often emotionally disturbed backgrounds. For many, the school offers the first happy experiences of their childhood. During the afternoon preceding the concert Anup and his party will be at St. Francis School where they will run music workshops and take part in the school's "International Week". Their visit to St Francis School will conclude with an impromptu concert to parents performed jointly by the two schools. Please contact Paul Hooper at Route22 Ltd for tickets or further information.
