On Sunday 5th June, Caterham Bowling Club was exactly 100 years old and members celebrated the occasion in fine style. Unfortunately, on the same day, half the average rainfall for June fell from the sky! Many members were dressed in Edwardian fashion but only a few hardy bowlers ventured on to the green to play bowls, as they would have done in 1911. Most of the members remained in the pavilion to entertain the guests who had come to join in the celebrations. After a welcome drink, everyone sat down to a sumptuous Edwardian style buffet that had been prepared by club members. Following lunch, Club President Michael Miller proposed the Loyal Toast and read a message from the Queen congratulating the club upon their achievement. Ladies Captain Jean Mann and Mens Captain John Nicholls then joined Mike to cut the cake, provided by club member, Mrs Rosemary Chitty. Although the weather rather spoiled the celebrations, everybody agreed that it was a wonderful day!
