On Tuesday, 21st June, members of Surrey County Council's Cabinet approved the changes as part of the second stage of a countywide bus review, covering Tandridge, Surrey Heath and west Woking. The council and bus operators agreed to add more buses on routes where demand is strong and reduce some services where demand is lower. The changes were shaped by the views of residents and bus operators. Two years ago it cost taxpayers more than £11 million to subsidise bus routes in the county because they are not profitable for their operators. This figure would have risen to £13 million by 2012 if action hadn't been taken. Ian Lake, Surrey County Council's Cabinet Member for Transport, said: "We spent a long time listening to the views of bus users and those views have shaped the changes. The review was an opportunity to take a fresh look at Surrey's bus routes to make sure they meet the needs of residents while providing value for money. "Action was needed because bus subsidy costs were spiralling by millions of pounds at taxpayers' expense. These changes ensure Surrey residents are served by buses that meet as many peoples' needs as possible while offering good value for money." The revised services will start on the weekend of 3 and 4 September and include: • New hourly Metrobus service 400 linking East Grinstead, Crawley, Gatwick Airport, East Surrey Hospital, Redhill, Godstone and Caterham. • Southdown route 410 from Redhill to Godstone and Oxted doubled in frequency. • Two buses an hour on route 409 between Caterham, Whyteleafe, Warlingham, Farleigh and Selsdon/Croydon, with new connecting service 509 from Caterham to Godstone, Lingfield and East Grinstead. • Improved links at commuting times from Deepcut to Brookwood station and from Bagshot, Lightwater and Windlesham to Sunningdale Station. • New links in west Surrey from Pirbright Camp to Guildford and Littlewick Road, in Horsell, to Woking and Guildford, as well as more buses for Hermitage Estate, in St Johns, and Paddock Hill, Ansell Road and Worsley Road estates. in Frimley. |
