A group of 21 people from Caterham and district left for Kenya last Monday to provide aid to four schools in the remote town of Kimilili in Western Kenya. Over £21,000 has been raised by the group from local schools, churches, Rotary Clubs and the community to help the children of Kmilili. Members of the Caterham Overseas Aid Trust ('C.O.A.T.'), de Stafford School staff members and two ex-pupils, church members, a staff nurse from East Surrey Hospital and friends will be undertaking building projects as well as teaching and interacting with the children. Leader of the trip, Geraint Jenkins is very pleased with the support from the community and said: "I would like to thank everyone from the communities of Caterham and Whyteleafe who have helped us to raise funds over the last 18 months. We are looking forward to working alongside our African hosts where we will be digging pit latrines, a pig sty and a kitchen. We'll return 'smelling of roses' or smelling of something at least." The group return to England on Monday 15th August and you will be able to read about the trip in the September Edition of The Caterham and District Independent. The group's next fundraising project is when The Welsh Male Voice Choir will perform at a concert on Saturday 8th October at de Stafford School. Tickets will be available from Geraint Jenkins on 01959 564772 after 15th August. |
