TELEPHONE SCAM WARNING |

Glen O'Dwyer of Computer Solutions is warning the public of a scam that is going round this area at the moment. Members of the public are being telephoned, often during the evening, and the caller claims to be from an organisation – sometimes large ones such as Microsoft or BT, or sometimes from a support company. They claim that the user has a computer virus which is causing trouble, and sometimes claim that unless the user sorts it out the user will have their Internet disconnected. The usual ploy is to offer to take control of the PC and fix the fault for a small fee. The user is guided through making the connection, and the caller 'shows' the user the virus files. Sometimes they just show the user their own temporary internet files which have strange names but are completely harmless and are part of the usual operation of the PC. During this process the user PC is infected with a Trojan - ie. A type of virus which pretends to do one thing (eg. remove viruses) but in fact does something unwanted (such as slowing the PC down, giving fake warnings, or allowing secret remote access). The user is asked to pay the fee by credit card. Credit card details can then be abused. In brief, the large ISPs will not call users. Very occasionally, if there is a problem, they may contact but they don't offer to fix the fault for a charge, and they will always offer the opportunity to be called back. Sometimes the caller may claim to be from a local company – again, this is not the case, although often a similar name is used. Remember – support companies have no way of knowing if your computer has a problem. If you have had such a call and have followed instructions to begin a remote session your PC may already be infected. (Anyone who thinks they may be a victim can take their PC in for free check at Computer Solutions). If you have given your credit card details then you should inform your bank. If in doubt always ask for a telephone number and ring that number and check that they can tell YOU your account details – don't let them obtain this information from you. If anyone would like more details they can contact Computer Solutions on 01883 336633. |
