On Saturday, 8th October the y Gyrlais Welsh Male Voice Choir from the Swansea Valley travelled all the way to Caterham to perform at de Stafford School. The concert was organised by the Caterhambased charity C.H.E.C.K. (Community Health and Education for Children of Kimilili). The choir, that originally formed in 1963, has the proud record of having won all the recognised 'Semi- Nationals' on more than one occasion, as well as the coveted Royal National Eisteddfod in Cardiff. The choir's repertoire included an African Trilogy of songs, Welsh hymns and various light pop and opera songs. The concert also featured superb music by de Stafford students Connor Cooper, on the piano and Erika and Lydia Gatward playing the clarinet and flute. Their highly talented and moving performances added variety to the programme of music and was greatly enjoyed by the audience. The concert ended with the choir singing the Welsh National Anthem, 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau' (Land of My Fathers). The concert raised £1,864 for C.H.E.C.K. through ticket sales and a raffle. The choir comes from the same area in Wales where the recent mining tragedy occurred and a leaving collection was made for the Swansea Miners Families raising £317. |
