A profile of JJ Browne Jewellers in Godstone Road
JJ Browne & Son Jewellers has been trading in Croydon Road, Caterham since 1921 when John Joseph Browne came to the UK from Ireland to escape the potato famine. On the 5th April 1986 the second branch of JJ Browne & Son opened in Godstone Road, and Andrew Browne, John Joseph's grandson, joined it on his 18th birthday.
"The shop was ideal because it was close enough to our other shop in Croydon Road if I needed any advice," said Andrew. "It is a beautiful old building which really lends itself to the sale of second-hand jewellery because it still has all its old features." Andrew explained that these days his customers like to purchase secondhand jewellery because they are more likely to find something unique.
"Everyone is looking for best value and second-hand jewellery represents that," said Andrew. "People also come here to sell their old jewellery or part exchange it for something different.
"We also decided to specialise in culture pearls and diamond set new jewellery because we wanted to sell something different to our other branch which sells more every-day jewellery and watches."
As one of the founders of the Shop Smart loyalty scheme, Andrew is especialy keen to promote the benefits of shopping locally. "It is important for everyone to continue to use their Shop Smart cards because the local shops will give them the best value and great service," said Andrew. "We also offer plenty of choice. I often get customers saying that they have been all over the place looking for something special, and then find exactly what they want here!"
