July saw the long-awaited arrival of the four Headteachers from Kimilili in Kenya - Patrick Wandili, the Head of St. Luke's Boys High School, Kimilili; Jane Wasike, Head of St. Theresa's Girls High School, Kimilili; Peter Wafula, Head of Kimilili Boys Primary and Rosemary Sitate, Head of Kimilili Girls Primary. The headteachers came over to meet and thank the members of the Caterham community who have supported C.H.E.C.K. (Community Health and Education for the Children of Kimilili) over the years. Their busy itinerary included a meeting with the Bishop of Southwark at Southwark Cathedral, a trip to the Houses of Parliament and visits to local schools and churches. They also visited Caterham Harestone Rotary Club and Caterham Rotary Club to thank them for their support. They gave a special thank you to Caterham Rotary Club for raising £9,500 to provide 110 wheelchairs for disabled people in Kimilili and its neigbouring towns in association with the Wheelchair Foundation UK. Geraint Jenkins MBE, founder of C.H.E.C.K., said: "It has been a proud and yet a humbling experience being with the Headteachers during the past few weeks. It has been a privilege to be in their company and good for the Caterham community members to put a face to Kimilili. People have been extremely welcoming and supportive of them. "I am not in the least surprised that everyone they have met has been entranced by them with their smiles, warmth and stories and by their devotion to the thousands of children under their care." |
