On Saturday 14th September, Caterham and District Horticultural Society held its Autumn Show at Hillcroft School in Caterham-on-the-Hill. The show was presided over by Councillor Sally Marks, Vice Chairman of Surrey County Council. With exhibits in over 70 classes, the visual feast marked the end of the growing year. The event showcased the hard work of Caterham and district gardeners and allotmenteers and a surprise addition to the proceedings this year was the presentation of prizes for the 'best local allotment' by Caterham-on-the-Hill Parish Council. Society Chairman Debbie Fox said: "I was particularly impressed with the high quality of the exhibits. From celery to carrots, focaccia bread to floral arrangements, it was a real celebration of the growing year." Other highlights were the heaviest pumpkin and giant decorative dahlias. Photographs on themes such as 'A walk in the woods' received prizes of a photographic frame sponsored by Vital Eyes Opticians in Caterham. The Society, which was threatened with closure last year, has gone from strength to strength since attracting new committee members. Society members will now look forward to the annual general meeting on Monday 30th September at the United Reformed Church, Harestone Valley Road, Caterham from 7.15pm.
