The Caterham Round Table Fireworks Display was another resounding success last Saturday, 2nd November, with thousands of people packing the Dene Field in Caterham-on-the-Hill to watch the fireworks. The traditional torchlight procession from Westway Common round to the Dene Field preceded the display, with people lining the High Street to watch the procession go by. Earlier in the day, youngsters had taken their Guys to the Dene Field for the 'Build a Guy' competition, judged this year by the Chairman of Tandridge District Council, Beverley Connolly. Finlay and Matilda Evans won first prize with their Guys 'Ant and Dec'. All the entrants received free tickets for the fireworks display. The event was marred this year by a burglary at the 1st Caterham (St. Mary's) scout hut in Park Road the night before the firework display. The burglary was discovered when members of Caterham Round Table went to the scout hut to pick up equipment due to be used at the display. The items that were taken included a single burner, a big camp oven, a propane gas bottle, a generator, a portable amplifier, lighting equipment, three air rifles and an air pistol. Neil Burtenshaw, Group Scout Leader at 1st Caterham Scout Group said: "We are one of the most active Scout Groups and we try to do as much as we can for the local community so when something like this happens it is like a kick in the teeth. However, we will try and continue to provide a full programme of activities for the Scouts." The members of Caterham Round Table are now gearing up for their next big event, their first ever Beer Festival being held at the Soper Hall in Caterham Valley on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd November.
