74 brave cyclists took part in the inaugural 'Waller Pain' cycle race up Waller Lane in Caterham last Sunday, organised by Scott Georgiades of the Caterham Round Table as part of the Caterham Festival. The riders powered their way up the one third of a mile, one in twelve incline in time trials, glad to be sheltered from the sun by the trees lining the route. The event attracted serious riders who travelled to Caterham especially for the race, while local cylists, both competitve and recreational, also turned out in force to take on the challenge. The winner of the Senior Men, Hal Bransby, clocked a time of just one minute and 26 seconds. Luke Barkaway came a very close second at the same time as Hal, with Sylvain Garde in third with one minute and 28 seconds. The winner of the Senior Women was Kelly Nugent, with a time of two minutes, 16 seconds and winning 'Fit Mum' Jo Bas-Thornton clocked two minutes 39 seconds. Nigel Harper won the 'Fat Dads' category in two minutes, 19 seconds. Kristian Cave won the Under-16's with his time of one minute 42 seconds. Chairman of the Caterham Fetival, Andy Parr, also deserves a mention for getting to the finishing post in three minutes 57 seconds! Clive Harper, Chairman of Round Table and brother of the winner of the 'Fat Dads' category, said “This was a fantastic event for Round Table and for Caterham and we hope to run the event again in the future”. |
