Around 1,500 people flocked to Blanchman's Farm nature reserve on the Limpsfield Road for the Warlingham Fair last month. The event on Saturday 19th June started with a procession through Warlingham of uniformed groups, colourful floats and a number of military vehicles led by the Warlingham Flute Band. Once the procession had arrived at Blanchman's Farm, the Fair was officially opened by May Queen Louise Dunn, aged 12, and the Chairman of Tandridge District Council, Alan Jones. The fair's compere was former district councillor Jeremy Pursehouse, almost unrecognisable dressed as the World Cup mascot, Zakumi the leopard! ‘Mother Christmas', Maggie Sheridan, was also in attendance.
Despite the overcast sky, the weather remained dry enabling visitors to enjoy the many stalls and attractions on offer. Events included a junior football tournament, wheelbarrow race, tug o' war contest and a performance from the Warlingham Pan Players Steel Band.
Other attractions included tombolas, arts and crafts, charity stalls, children's activities and even an interactive reptile and animals display. The organisation ‘Hearing Dogs for Deaf People' also had a stall with hearing dog Baxter in attendance who was there to promote his book, ‘Baxter: The Tale of a Talking Dog'!
The proceeds from the fair will fund next year's event and any profits will go to the groups which make the fair possible.
Warlingham resident, Jane Ede, said: "Everybody works so hard so it is great to see so many people here. Full credit to the committee – they are very keen and enthusiastic and we are very lucky in Warlingham to have such a great team."
