East Surrey MP Sam Gyimah has announced his support for Britain staying in a reformed European Union, following the announcement of a referendum to take place on 23 June 2016. Mr Gyimah will work with Britain Stronger In Europe, the cross-party campaign group headed by former Marks & Spencer boss Stuart Rose, as a political champion. In addition, Mr Gyimah will work during the campaign to reach out to younger voters in East Surrey and across the UK, encouraging them to be fully involved in the campaign.
Mr Gyimah said: “Having considered this issue at length, I have no fear of an EU exit; Britain is a great country, and we would absolutely find a way to thrive if we decided to go our own way. However, I reject the false choice that says our future prosperity depends on our withdrawal; I believe our best future lies in the European Union, with special status and leading the fight for more reform.
“I will therefore be campaigning for an In vote in the referendum taking place on 23 June, and thereafter for a reformed Europe that prioritises extending the free market, securing ambitious global trade deals and rejects the principle of ever-closer union for all member states.
“I will spend this campaign reaching out to young people with a clear message: get involved, make your voice heard, and don’t be left with the consequences of a choice you didn’t make.”
