Baxter, a fun loving little Border Terrier recently visited Caterham, Oxted & Godstone Lions Club (COGS). He was accompanied by his profoundly deaf owner Adam Wilson who went along to explain how dogs like Baxter can help those with severe hearing difficulties. This little dog has been specially trained to alert his owner to everyday household noises and alarms – the sounds that most people take for granted. It is a companionship as well as a working relationship - much like that that exists between a blind person and a guide dog. If the telephone rings Baxter alerts his master to it and when the alarm goes off in the morning it is Baxter who makes sure Adam gets out of bed. Baxter is also an ambassador, helping Adam to give presentations in order to publicise how and why dogs like him are trained. In doing so they also help to raise funds for that training to continue and to help promote deaf awareness.
