There were smiles and tears of joy at Oasis Academy Coulsdon on Thursday 25th August as Year 11 students received their long awaited GCSE examination results. Teachers were there to celebrate with them as they watched the students they have worked with for five years reap the rewards of hard work and determination. Students at the Academy have maintained the same level of high standards as last year’s cohort with them matching the record-breaking results of last year’s cohort. “We couldn’t be prouder of our students this year” said Andy Booth, Principal, “they have worked tirelessly to ensure that they achieved the best possible results, and this is evident in 66% of them attaining 5 A*- C grades including English and Mathematics.” Highest achieving students this year were Francesca Mason and Head Girl and Boy, Madalina Stremtan and Oliver Griffin. Between them they secured 29 A*/A grades, including an A in Drama for Oliver who will be joining the BRIT School in September 2016. Oliver starred as Bill Sykes in the Academy production of ‘Oliver!’ earlier this year and wowed audiences with his performance. “I am delighted with this set of results” said Oliver “they will allow me to follow my dreams and I am very thankful to all of my teachers for everything they have done to help me realise this dream.” Demonstrating that attendance really is linked to achievement were Katie Fitzwalter, Manav Patel and Dahveed Gayle-Morris who have all had 100% attendance throughout their five years at the Academy. Between them they have managed to secure five A*/A grades, 12 B grades and four C grades. Also celebrating was Mohammed Farook who secured two A*, six As and two Bs. Mohammed joined the Academy late in Year 7 with English as his additional language, however since then he has worked diligently allowing nothing to stand in his way to secure a set of fantastic grades, including an A grade in English. Proving that attitude, hard work and determination is equally important to attendance are Emily Lock and James Milton. Between then they made some of the greatest progress in their year group, with Emily making 6 levels of progress in certain subjects, something that is not achieved by even some top scoring students. “This cohort of students has taken advantage of every opportunity given to them with revision sessions, study groups and a fantastic attitude” said Kate Phillips, Assistant Principal, “they haven’t let anything stand in their way and deserve the results they have attained. The fact they have secured such an impressive set of results is a true testament to them.” The overall achievements for students at the Academy and further information will be available shortly on the Academy website.
