Caterham Rotary Club had two special guests at their weekly meeting yesterday, Thursday 19th September. Victoria Lawrence from St. Catherine's Hospice and Dave Shagra from the Back-Up Trust were both attending to receive cheques from the Rotary members on behalf of their charities. St. Catherine's Hospice was the main beneficiary of this year's Rotary Bunny Fun Run and on receiving a cheque from President, Mike Smith for £1,500 Victoria said: "We are so grateful to Caterham Rotary for making us the beneficiaries of the Fun Run this year. Everyone at St. Catherine's is delighted, thank you very much." The Back-Up Trust supports people with spinal cord injuries and inspires them to transform their lives. Dave Shagra was presented with a cheque for £1,700 representing half of the proceeds of the Rotary annual Charity Golf Day held at Bletchingley Golf Club on 7th June. The £3,400 raised was shared equally between the Back-Up Trust and Rotary charities. After the presentation Dave gave a talk on the work of Back-Up based on his personal experience as a wheelchair user following a spinal cord injury when he was 21. During his talk, Dave said: "After my accident my life had changed because I no longer had my independence. I was trying to find out about sports for the disabled when someone told me about the courses run by the Back-Up Trust. The course I went on changed my life - by the end of the week I had really changed my mind about what I could and couldn't do. This money will help others to go on courses run by the Trust and their lives will be transformed. " For more information about the work of the Back-Up Trust visit www.backuptrust.org.uk |
