The season is now well under way and so far it has been a mixed start for Whyteleafe FC. The team was slow off the blocks with the first three league games ending in defeat at the hands of Dulwich Hamlet (0-2), Eastbourne Town (2- 3) and Folkestone Invicta (0-2). Invicta proved again to be a thorn in Leafe's side, knocking them out of the FA Cup in the preliminary round, a week after the league fixture. Leafe had actually come within two minutes of winning the game down in Folkestone but a late equaliser resulted in a 2-2 scoreline. Folkestone ended up winning 2-1 at the replay in Church Road. So with league matters to concentrate the mind, Leafe won their next two games against Godalming and Burgess Hill, both by 2-0. They then played out a 0-0 draw with Faversham before a disappointing refereeing performance played it's part in a 3-2 loss away at Walton Casuals. The game also saw the very impressive midfield addition to the squad, Jay Garrick, sent off.
Intial thoughts are that Leafe are in a better place than they were last season. The squad, largely unchanged from last season is still young, but most of the players now have a season's experience at this level under their belt. Importantly though, Nicky English has added some new players to the side that have bolstered the midfield and provided a bit more cut in the attacking third. A midtable position at worst, looks well within their grasp. You can catch the Leafe in home action during October on the 8th v North Greenford (FA Trophy), 15th v Maidstone Utd and 29th v Walton & Hersham.
