On Sunday 14th October the first ever Tandridge Sports Awards were held at de Stafford Sports Centre in Caterham to identify local sporting talent and honour the passion the district has for sport. Chris Cole, Tandridge Trust's Sports Development Officer hosted the event. He said: "We are very proud to be presenting these awards for the first time today. The Olympics was a great inspiration to many people and we thought that these awards would be a great legacy from the Olympics for us to have in Tandridge and the other boroughs in Surrey." The Chairman of Tandridge District Council, Sakina Bradbury was the guest of honour to present the awards. Sakina said: "The sporting success in Tandridge owes a lot to volunteers and for my year as Chairman of the Council I would like to recruit more volunteers in Tandridge. I think it is especially important for young people in Tandridge to get involved in youth volunteering". The winners of the Tandridge Sports Awards were: 'Sports Club of the Year' - Whyteleafe Football Club. Chairman of Whyteleafe FC, Mark Coote and Lisa Pacey were present to collect the award for the club's achievements in developing youth football over the last ten years. 'Disability Sport Award' - Theresa Barnett for her enthusiasm and progress in playing Boccia, despite having a disability which limits her capacity to undertake everyday activity. 'Volunteer of the Year' - Dave Exall of the Tandridge Kayak and Canoe Club. A great motivator, Dave has volunteered for over 20 years with the club as a coach helping others to build their skills and confidence. 'Young Volunteer of the Year' - Gabriella Parr who assists with a number of different age groups at Limpsfield Badminton Club. She regularly helps out with the beginners' junior group as well as helping to organise the multi-sports holiday courses at the club. 'Sports Personality of the Year' - Lucy Donovan of South Nutfield Cricket Club. As the parent of a promising eight year-old ten years ago, Lucy took charge of the newly formed colts section and has since transformed a small village club into a thriving hub of the community. 'Young Sports Person of the Year' - Oliver Newport of Oxted School and Crawley Athletic Club and Blackheath and Bromley Harriers. Oliver is ranked number one in the UK at long jump in the U20 age group in 2012 and has a realistic chance of competing at Rio 2016! Winners of the Tandridge Sports Awards will be put forward for the Surrey Sports Awards 2012 to be held this December. |
