Year 9 students start the ‘cycle to Africa’ challenge. Last week students and staff from Oasis Academy Coulsdon took part in a mega challenge in support of Sport Relief 2014 – a sponsored cycle to Africa - to try and raise as much money as possible to donate to the charity. Chris Calvo, Family Leader, said: “Inspired by Davina McCall, Alex Jones and John Bishop’s Sport Relief Challenges, the Student Council came up with the idea of creating a gruelling challenge for our own students” Every afternoon students and staff from the Academy cycled around the school field in the hope to reach a massive total of 2,500 miles, the distance between the UK and Africa. As well as cycling other fundraising events were held including Laser Tag, table tennis competitions, sponsored silences and cake sales, with all proceeds going to Sport Relief. Students from Year 6 at Oasis Academy Byron had a great afternoon joining in the laser tag games. After school all the students in the Academy were invited to put their fitness levels to the test in the Oasis Academy Coulsdon Fitness Friday Sport Relief Circuit Challenge, a fun fitness challenge, designed to suit all ability levels. Students from Oasis Academy Byron and Oasis Academy Shirley Park sent teams to help clock up the miles to Africa and join in the Laser Tag, Table Tennis and Fitness Friday Challenge. Andy Booth, Associate Principal of Oasis Academy Coulsdon said: “The Student Council have pulled out all the stops this year, in coming up with great ideas of ways to raise money for Sport Relief as well as keeping fit. All of the students had a great time and we are still busy counting the final amount raised for Sport Relief!”
