On Sunday 27th April, local racing driver, Michael Gibbins, got off to a flying start in the opening round of the SRCC Sports 2000 championship. Driving a Lola T590 in this year’s striking new livery of blue and red, Michael claimed the pinto engined pole position, the fastest race lap and the overall pinto engine win. Michael was a winner again at the second meeting of the Sports 2000 calendar at Brands Hatch on Saturday 10th May. Frequent showers made tyre choice difficult, and the continuing drizzle as the scheduled qualifying time approached resulted in all the participants arriving at the collecting paddock shod in treaded rain tyres. The start of the qualifying session was delayed by about 15 minutes and as the weather appeared to be lifting, Michael decided to switch to slicks, much to the surprise of the other competitors. It proved to be a wise choice as Michael finished first in class and third overall. Michael went on to win his class in the race itself and once again enjoyed the podium presentation. |
