It was an historic day for Caterham Cricket Club last Friday, 4th July as they played their first ever girls only colts match as they visited Newdigate Girls, and they came away with victory by a narrow margin of ten runs. All the players in the match, which proved to be a great advertisement for girls cricket, were aged between nine and twelve. After winning the toss Caterham skipper, Jessamine Kelly invited the Newdigate Girls to bat first in the pairs format and they reached a total of 268. The first wicket to fall came courtesy of a superb piece of fielding with a direct hit run out from Nia Bullen, thereafter the visitors picked up six more wickets all clean bowled with Daniela Parrett (2 for 17) the most successful bowler plus Amy Johnstone, Jessamine Kelly, Melissa Parrett and Jess Whyatt all picking up a wicket apiece. Newdigate captain, Faye Lovie was their most successful batsmen. The Caterham reply began well with Amy Johnstone and Daniela Parrett running well between the wickets to get them off to a sound start. The second pair got off to a bad start with a run out off their first ball but this was to be the only wicket Caterham lost in their innings and this proved to be the difference between the sides. Their recovery was aided by Melissa Parrett hitting the only boundary of the match, and the good work was continued throughout the innings. The scampering between the wickets of fourth pair, Jessamine Kelly and top scorer, Leila Treacher put Caterham in front before Lowri Bullen and Melissa Parrett sensibly played out the last two overs to secure victory. The Caterham Colts Manager, Tony Parrett, said after the game: “This has been a tremendous success which started with our winter advertising campaign and indoor nets, following through into the summer as we continued to attract enough girls to put this side together. We still have a small squad and it would be great to get a few more along to add some depth into the squad so we’d love to hear from other girls aged 9 to 11 who want to join. We will certainly be looking to play one or two more girls games this season. We do have a history with girls cricket, our current U15 (boys) side contains three girls who all play for Surrey and the girls coach, Chloe Samuels also represented the county.” For more information about Caterham Cricket Club, e-mail Richard Parrett at This email address is being protected from spambots.
