In the heart of Caterham lies one of the best community rugby clubs in Surrey, Old Caterhamians RFC. At the heart of that lie a group of women who form the Old Cats Women's RFC. You heard correctly - a group of women who spend their Sunday afternoons tackling opponents in an attempt to run an egg-shaped ball over the try line to score points.
Women's rugby is on the rise, with the World Cup currently underway in France. The England Roses were off to a cracking start after beating Samoa 65-3 in their first game last Friday. With all of the England games on television this year and both men's and women's Rugby Sevens soon to be included in the Olympics from 2016, rugby has really become the game of the moment. Especially for the ladies! We train on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm-8.45pm; training includes fitness, set play and team development among other things. For this season we also welcome a newly reformed coaching team, including Kevin Warner and Steve Williams, two thoroughly experienced coaches who have led the women to various successes. Also joining them this year are ex-players Chloe and Kirsty, each of who specialise in different areas of play. The team itself is formed of women of all ages from all walks of life; pharmacists, students, policewomen and more! We are one of Caterham's finest fitness classes, as well as one of the best social clubs! A rugby club is the best possible way to take a group of people and make them friends for life. However, we need the community to help us by getting to know us, getting involved and spreading the word that is Women's Rugby! If you know anyone who could benefit in any way by joining our club, please tell them to get in touch! On August 23rd, we are holding a training day for ladies who want to know more about us. It will run all day from 9.30am and include a BBQ, a post-training social and your chance to see what we're all about. All ages and abilities are welcome, and we even have ladies from other local clubs joining us for the day. For any further information regarding the club, go on the website or our Facebook/Twitter pages, email us or give the Ladies Captain Steph a call on 07738 737450.
